LISTEN TO THE VERSION FOR SOPRANO AND PIANO AT 1:01:22 with Jessica Beebe and Mark Livshits
NOTES
This work was originally written in 2011 as part of a 9-movement song cycle for mezzo-soprano, baritone and piano, commissioned by LyricFest to be paired with Schubert’s Winterreise.The composer arranged the work in 2018 for treble chorus and dedicated the arrangement to Sandra Snow. A later arrangement for soprano and piano was premiered by Jessica Beebe and Mark Livshits. This is an homage to the passing of time: a reflection on autumn turning into winter. Silence ensues as one takes refuge inside while wind stirs and trees toss outside, reminding us of the cycles of nature and the inner and outer worlds of our being. A gentle melody is framed by a sparse yet expressive piano part where waves of motion and longing gradually give way to peace and tranquility.
TEXT
Now Close the Windows by Robert Frost
Now close the windows and hush all the fields;
If the trees must, let them silently toss;
No bird is singing now, and if there is,
Be it my loss.
It will be long ere the marshes resume,
It will be long ere the earliest bird:
So close the windows and not hear the wind,
But see all wind-stirred.
Now Close the Windows
