Reflections on the Dranyen was commissioned for, and dedicated to, Grammy award-winning guitarist William Kanengiser as part of “The Diaspora Project,” made possible by a generous grant from The Augustine Foundation with support from International Arts Foundation. The piece is inspired by the composer’s Tibetan music fieldwork in the Nepalese Himalaya, the dranyen (traditional Tibetan lute), and a Tibetan folk song “The long life of the Dranyen”. It also is a personal reflection on her interactions and experiences with the people, land and the beautiful, ancient culture in northern Nepal. Reflections on the Dranyen was chosen as the required piece for the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Artist Competition, 2022.
